Rogers US Roaming is $1.45 a minute

What happened to Fido’s 25c roaming plus 10c long distance when you are traveling in the US? Yesterday when I drove to Bellingham I received this text message:

Rogers welcomes you to the U.S.! $1.45/min voice roaming rate applies. To save up to 61%, get a Travel Pack @ http://www.rogers.com/wm/us (data fees apply)

That is just steep for US roaming, when I can get a plan from US operators that includes long distance to Canada and roaming in Canada. I cannot see the justification for charging this sort of a rate, and their is no way that this represents the interconnect cost to the US operator plus some profit.

We need a GSM/UMTS alternative in Canada, come on Telus, I keep reading that you may be considering rolling out an LTE (the successor to UMTS) network – the sooner you do that the better.

(Read my follow up after I looked at the rate reductions you can get from Rogers by buying their add-on travel packs).
