Blackberry Bold 9700 get 5.0.0.423 official

Bell LogoBell Mobility have released 5.0.0.423 for the Blackberry Bold. If you are on Bell you can just perform an Over the Air (OTA) firmware upgrade — be aware that this may take a while and burn though a lot of data, so know your data plan. For folks on other networks, you can grab the file here on blackberry.com.

Be sure to delete the vendor.xml file prior to installing this, else it won’t upgrade non-bell devices. Also, a word of warning to those on AT&T, this may be release firmware, but AT&T users have reportedly had issues with some versions of OS5 on the Bold 9000, and it is possible that this is related to some of the service books that they are sending to the device. If you are on AT&T and have issues – in particular the reboot loop, let us know.

OS 5.0.0.411 for Bold 9000 & Curve 8900

The latest BlackBerry firmware leaks for the Bold 9000 and the Curve 8900 has been spotted over at bbleaks.com. There is also one for the 8520 and all three versions of 5.0.0.411 is available on BlackBerry Cool..

I installed 5.0.0.411 on my Bold 9000, and the single thing that impressed me most, was the significant reduction in the boot time. I hate waiting for my BB to reboot, as I am sure most other people with BlackBerrys do, hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Here are a couple of torrents of the the operating systems, hopefully helping to distribute them more efficiently.

Leaked Bold 9000 OS 5.0.0.348 Torrent Found

A few days back crackberry.com announced that a leaked version of OS 5.0.0.348 for the Blackberry Bold 9000 had been found. Here is a torrent for the firmware file, and it seems to work, so if folks seed you should be able to get a descent copy.

Disclaimer: remember, this is an untested and unsupported version of the firmware for the BlackBerry Bold 9000. If you have problems with this firmware, you are on your own. Not your wireless operator, RIM or I will be able to help you, so you are flashing your device entirely at your own risk. Also, if you have a company BlackBerry, you may be violating your IT Policy by installing this firmware, and this could get you fired!

Update: This version (5.0.0.348) has been reported by AT&T users to cause a reboot-loop. Check this post BlackBerry Bold 9000 OS 5.0.0.348 Does Not Work with AT&T. Either way, you probably want to take care using this if you are using AT&T in the USA on a Bold 9000

Creating a Wireless Client Bridge

I recently moved into a new apartment that included Internet service as part of the rental agreement. Of course, the landlord’s idea of included Internet amounted to my handing him my laptop while he surreptitiously typed his WEP password into my wireless connection settings in OS-X. I won’t even comment on how long it took me to open the KeyChain utility and find the key for use in my BlackBerry Bold, UMA enabled Nokia 6301 from Fido and so on, and all was well with my WiFi enabled electronics… except for one small problem…

For many years I have been a subcriber to Vonage’s VOIP service. I know there is much mixed feelings about Vonage out there, but they have served me incredibly well since I signed up in 2003. Vonage however, works though an ATA that only has an ethernet connector, so there was no way I could hook it to the landlord’s free Internet. Remembering that DD-WRT, the alternative firmware for the very common Broadcom and Atheros based WiFi routers that one can buy for about $40 – $50 at most consumer electronic stores today, can operate as a bridged client, I thought I would give it a try.
